The Significance of Less Toxic Skincare and Makeup

Less toxic skincare and makeup involve using products that steer clear of harmful chemicals, toxins, and potentially damaging ingredients. These products are formulated to nurture and protect the skin without subjecting it to harsh or potentially hazardous substances. Opting for clean products minimizes the risk of skin irritations, allergic reactions, or other adverse effects that may arise from using products containing synthetic fragrances, parabens, sulfates, or other harmful additives.

Moreover, clean skincare and makeup often incorporate natural, organic, or plant-based ingredients known for their beneficial properties. Ingredients like aloe vera, jojoba oil, shea butter, and various antioxidants can provide hydration, soothe the skin, and offer numerous benefits for maintaining a healthy complexion without the risks associated with harmful additives.

What Ingredients Should I Avoid in My Skincare routine?

Several commonly used skincare ingredients have raised concerns due to their potential adverse effects on both skin health and overall well-being:

  1. PEGs (Polyethylene Glycols): PEGs are often utilized as thickeners, solvents, or softeners in skincare products. Prolonged use of products containing PEGs might lead to skin irritation or allergic reactions, particularly in individuals with sensitive skin.
  2. Methyl and Propyl Parabens: Parabens are preservatives commonly found in skincare and cosmetic products. Research has suggested that parabens can disrupt hormone function and potentially contribute to reproductive issues or hormonal imbalances over time.
  3. Aluminum: Aluminum compounds are frequently found in antiperspirants. Concerns have been raised about their potential link to breast cancer and their ability to mimic estrogen, which might contribute to hormone-related issues.
  4. Formaldehyde: Often present in various cosmetic products as a preservative, formaldehyde has been linked to skin irritation and allergies. Long-term exposure may pose risks such as respiratory issues and potential carcinogenic effects.
  5. Phthalates: Phthalates are often used to enhance the flexibility and durability of plastics. They can be found in fragrances and certain cosmetics and have been associated with hormonal disruption and reproductive issues.
  6. Oxybenzone: Commonly used in sunscreens, oxybenzone has raised concerns due to its potential hormone-disrupting properties, which might contribute to various health issues upon prolonged exposure.

How to Heal My Skin and Overall Well-Being?

Being mindful of these ingredients in skincare and makeup products is essential for safeguarding both skin health and overall well-being. Opting for products free from these harmful additives can reduce the risk of skin irritations, allergies, or potential long-term health issues.

And speaking of a less toxic skincare routine, let me share some of the products I use and trust. I like A’del Cosmetics and all they stand for. What impresses me is how clean their skincare is and how transparent they are with the ingredients they use. The founder had a health scare and rather than taking the traditional medicine route, chose to clean up her lifestyle. This included her makeup and skincare routine. Every time I have used the foundation and blush, I never feel like I have to cake any on. It goes on so smooth and evenly. And if you are worried about shading, don’t be. They provide help in selecting the right color for your skin tone. It’s been one of my favorites ever. The mascara I have to put several coats on but it stays on really well. The eyeliner last a really long time and a little goes a long way! Give them a try!

What I use from A’del

  • Mascara
  • Eyeliner
  • Cream Blush (Shade: rose petal)
  • Cream Foundation (2.5 in the winter, 3.5 in the summer)
